TROUTDALE
The Troutdale area - actually the confluence of the Sandy River with the Columbia, was first identified by the crew of the ship "Discovery" under Captain George Vancouver, in 1792. Settlement followed in the 1850s, and the town was named, after trout ponds in the area, in 1872. The train arrived in 1882 and Troutdale was well on its way to becoming a reality.
In 1883, the layout of the town was platted and a "building boom" in the early 1890's established much of what the town is today. Although two fires have swept the community since its inception it still has many of its old buildings and evokes nostalgia.
Today, Troutdale, at exit 17 on I-84, is the unofficial western gateway to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area and the Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway. It has a wonderful sense of community, with some excellent dining choices and interesting shops. The Columbia Gorge Premium Outlets mall sits between the town and the freeway. It is also an excellent place to buy gas before heading up The Gorge.
