COLUMBIA GORGE DAMSThe Dalles Dam visitor center is located at Seufert Park (I-84 exit 87) in The Dalles, Oregon, and maintains a visitor center in the old Seufert Cannery. The dam itself was only open for 10 tours in 2009, due to security concerns, but the visitor center has a wealth of good information and is open every day from May through September from 9am to 5pm. We will post future tour dates in our "Events" section as soon as they are made available. For more information call (541) 296-9778.
The Dalles Dam(courtesy Army Corps of Engineers) Bonneville Dam, the first dam across the Columbia River, was completed in 1937, creating 48-mile long Lake Bonneville to its east. There are two powerhouses and two locks, with only one being used currently. Two fish ladders allow native salmon and steelhead access to their upriver spawning grounds. There are two good resources for information: Wikipedia and the University of Washington site on Columbia Basin Research. There are visitor facilities on both sides of the river with park rangers giving interpretive talks and tours during the day. The Oregon side has the additional opportunity to visit the navigation locks. The dam is open daily, unless closed for security concerns. It's a good idea to call ahead to confirm their hours. In Oregon call 541-374-8820 or 541-374-8344, in Washington 509-427-4281.
