THE DALLES

Just 84 miles east of Portland on I-84, The Dalles is the eastern gateway to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area.  TYpical of eastern Oregon communities, The Dalles has much drier weather than the more western Gorge communites, with around 300 days of sunshine, and only 14 inches of rain, a year.  This makes the area ideal for the growing of cherries, wine grapes and other soft fruits.  The Dalles is the largest of The Gorge communities with over 13,000 residents.

The Dalles is rich in history - Lewis and Clark really DID sleep here.  Settlers followed, then ranchers, then growers, and today it's home to Google and a multitude of smaller eco-friendly businesses..
